About

What is MixedContent?

Mixed Content is the online home of Colin Brumelle. I’m the founder of BirdHerd (http://birdherd.com) a service that makes it easy for groups and teams to use Twitter. Previously, I’ve also founded Rilli (http://rilli.com) a web service that aims to change the way people interact with their city, and their friends. I also take on select freelance projects, usually using Ruby, PHP or Python. I love working on big data sets and doing interesting visualizations, like this one for CBC Radio3. In the past, I was a partner at Drupal startup Bryght which was acquired in 2006.

In the very distant past, I have also worked for a number of Post Secondary Institutions (including Princeton,BCIT, Emily Carr Institute, and Simon Fraser University) tinkering with various forms of web geekery in small windowless rooms.

I’ve also played guitar professionally for over 10 years, touring and releasing numerous CD’s, and I love to combine my passion of music with my knowledge of technology.

What’s with the name MixedContent anyway?

MixedContent takes its name from an XML element that contains both child and text nodes. But more to the point, I liked the image the name suggests. I have many interests, from PHP and CSS coding, to chaos theory, to music and design, and I thought that MixedContent is an apt name for these divergent topics. When seen in the light of podcasting, flickr posts and all, the name ‘MixedContent’ might even be prophetic.

Where are you located?

I’m currently living in Vancouver BC, although I’ve spent the last 3 years living in San Francisco, CA.
